Assistive Listening Devices

Assistive listening devices (ALD’s) are devices that can help an individual to hear better in day-to-day communication situations.

Some ALD’s are be used with hearing aids to make hearing easier for things such as on the mobile telephone, or watching television.

Some ALD’s are used without hearing aids to make hearing easier such as personal amplifiers, or TV headphones.

ALD’s are also available to make things such as smoke alarms, alarm clocks, and doorbells easier to hear.

Some examples are:

  • Streamers
A bluetooth streamer is worn by the hearing aid user, usually around the neck. It acts as an interface between the hearing aids and the device the hearing aid user is wanting to listen to (TV, phone etc). The hearing aid user is provided with a clear sound, minimal background noise and minimal interference. The hearing aid user can adjust the volume as required.
  • TV device
This plugs into the TV and either sends the signal, via Bluetooth, directly to the hearing aids, or to the streamer being used with the hearing aids. It enables the hearing aid user to watch TV with others, with each being able to adjust the volume to suit themselves.
  • Telephone device
This plugs into the landline phone, and sends a very clear signal to the hearing aids via the bluetooth streamer. The hearing aid user can answer/hang up the call from anywhere, usig a button on the streamer.
  • Lapel microphone
This is good for situations where there is one speaker eg: meetings, for church, in the car. The speaker wears the lapel microphone and the signal comes through to hearing aids via bluetooth clearly, even from a distance or with no visual cues
