What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the name given to ringing, buzzing, hissing or any other noises in the head. Currently there is no cure but it can be successfully managed. About 20% of the population experience it.
Triggers for tinnitus are:
- excessive noise exposure
- age related hearing loss
- excessive stress or trauma
- some prescription or non prescription drugs
Some tips for managing tinnitus:
- get enough sleep
- try to manage stress
- avoid food triggers most of the time
- add noise into your environment (avoid silence)
- wear hearing protection when exposed to loud noise
If a hearing loss is also present, hearing aids can be effective in minimising tinnitus as they amplify surrounding noises helping to take the focus off the other noises in the head. If you experience this effect it is a good idea to have a hearing assessment. You may be referred for medical investigation, or strategies can be discussed for managing it.
